8. Brief description of Research Group’s activities and achievements

The Research Group on Physical Activity and Health (NuPAF) was founded in 1991 with the purpose of designing and conducting research projects, training undergraduate and graduate students in the research process, and serve as a consulting group in the area of health-related physical activity and fitness.

Since 1993, NuPAF has been registered in the CNPq Directory of Research Groups in Brazil. Several research projects have been funded and developed with success, with the involvement of senior researchers, students and technicians from several health professions, mainly Physical Education and Nutrition majors.

In 1997, NuPAF started the Brazilian Congress on Physical Education and Health, which grew to become one of the main scientific events in the area in Brazil. From 2009, the Congress became the official event of the Brazilian Society of Physical Activity and Health (www.sbafs.org.br).

This research group has been the foundation for the Physical Education Graduate Program (master and doctoral levels) at UFSC in the area of health-related physical activity.

A significant number of scientific publications has been produced – theses and dissertations, journal articles, books, conference papers and abstracts.

In the service area, the group has served as a consulting resource for surveys and programs development for SESI (Social Service of Industries in Brazil), in the areas of active leisure and health promotion.

In 2005, the Group received a grant from an international consortium – ILSI/CDC/OPAS – to develop an intervention study (Saúde na Boa) in Brazilian high schools to promote healthy eating and physical activity.
